Traffic Advisory: Boise State Geothermal Project Continues

Expect evening traffic delays at University Drive/Capitol Blvd. Motorists traveling around Boise State University at the intersection of University Drive and Capitol Boulevard can expect traffic delays in the evenings starting Monday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.

Work will not affect rush hour traffic. Crews will only work in the intersection at night. The work is expected to wrap up by the end of the week.

Additional traffic alerts/advisories will be issued when daytime work resumes along Capitol Boulevard and eventually across the Boise River. Construction crews are installing the pipeline to connect Boise State to the City of Boise’s historic geothermal heating system. The entire first phase of the project is expected to be completed by January.

The Morrison Center, the Multi-Purpose Class Room, the Interactive Learning Center and the Math and Geosciences Building are connecting as part of the first phase. The Administration Building, Student Union Building and the Center for Environmental Sciences and Economics are among the buildings that will connect when phase two begins next summer. When completed, approximately 625,000 square feet of building space will be heated from geothermal energy.

A majority of the funding for the project comes from federal appropriations won through the efforts of Sen. Crapo and Congressman Mike Simpson. Both Dept. of Energy and the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development funds will be used in the project.

The City of Boise has operated a geothermal district heating system since 1983.  Natural geothermal water hotter than 170 degrees is pumped from the ground near St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, distributed through the downtown area and re-injected into the geothermal aquifer near Julia Davis Park. The system currently serves 64 customers, heating approximately 3.9 million square feet of building space.
