Literature for Lunch Announces Fall Schedule

Literature for Lunch, a monthly book discussion group supported by the Boise State University Department of English, returns Sept. 3. This semester’s selections focus on the complex personal, political and cultural dynamics of the refugee experience from points of view across the globe.

Book discussions are free and open to the public from 12:10-1 p.m. at the Boise Public Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd. No reservations are required.

Friday, Sept. 3. “The Road Home,” by Rose Tremain. Lev, an immigrant laborer from Eastern Europe, finds London a strange but invigorating place in this novel full of pathos and comedy.

Friday, Oct. 1. “Infidel,” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. This memoir follows a young Muslim woman through her youth in east Africa, emigration to Holland to avoid an arranged marriage, and participation in the Dutch experiment of offering asylum to refugees.

Friday, Nov. 5. “What is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng,” by Dave Eggers. This fictionalized memoir follows the epic journey of a Sudanese civil war refugee from a “Lost Boy” in the camps of Ethiopia and Kenya to life in America.

Friday, Dec. 3. “The Clothes on Their Back,” by Linda Grant. The sensitive, bookish child of timid Hungarian refugee parents, Vivien Kovacs learns to navigate British society and, by forging a relationship with her criminal uncle, come to terms with her hidden heritage.

Books are available at the Boise State Bookstore (426-1362), which will give a 25 percent discount and validate 30 minutes of parking in the visitor lot behind the Administration Building (enter at the intersection of University Drive and Joyce Street). Books also are available for a 20 percent discount at A Novel Adventure (344-8088), located at 906 W. Main St. in downtown Boise.
