Boise State’s Raymond Named First Occupant of the Frank and Bethine Church Chair of Public Affairs

Raymond_GregGregory Raymond, a long-time political science professor at Boise State University, has been named the first occupant of the Frank and Bethine Church Chair of Public Affairs, an endowed chair housed in Boise State’s College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs.

Full funding of the chair’s endowment has been a principal mission of the Frank Church Institute at Boise State University, which was established in 1982 to honor the achievements and to carry forward the principles of the late U.S. Sen. Frank Church of Idaho.

Long associated with the Frank Church Institute at Boise State University, Raymond’s charge in his five-year tenure will be to emphasize “those ideals which the senator held dear – a strong belief in the rule of law, eloquence firmly based in reason, and an unwavering faith in the American political system.”

“Greg Raymond is one of Boise State’s finest and most prodigious scholars,” said Melissa Lavitt, dean of Boise State’s College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. “His selection for this chair is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Frank Church.”

Since coming to Boise State, Raymond has served as director of the Survey Research Center (1986-1989), chairman of the Political Science Department (1990-1996), and director of the Honors College (1997-2007). He was named Idaho Professor of the Year in 1994 by the Carnegie Foundation and has received Boise State’s Outstanding Researcher Award, as well as eight awards for teaching excellence. He has published 15 books and more than 100 articles, reviews, and essays on foreign policy and world politics. Raymond has lectured at universities and research institutes in 22 countries, and his work has been supported by grants from the American Political Science Association, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the U.S. Department of State, and other government agencies.

“We really feel he’s one of us at the Institute,” said Byron Johnson, president of the board of directors for the Frank Church Institute at Boise State University. “He has the academic quality that will give luster to this chair.”

Raymond received his doctorate in international studies from the University of South Carolina and was a Pew Faculty Fellow in International Affairs at Harvard University.
